More Life Drawings

Some pics from week two of the life-drawing class, led by Jon Hooper. I struggled with most of the poses this week, but then again I tend to struggle more when drawing the male figure. I think that's partly because men are generally less curvy than women, so I don't tend to see as many shapes in a male pose.

At least, that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it! It was good practise though, as I really had to force myself through some of the poses. Again, these were very quickly drawn; the longest was five minutes.

Ok, so we had the life-drawing class yesterday evening, and despite being very out of practise, I had a thoroughly good time. The class was led by Andy Latham, who is largely responsible for organising the whole thing, so thanks Andy!

Most of the poses were a couple of minutes long, and the emphasis was on getting a feel for the form, balance, etc, rather than trying to make a "pretty picture", as it were.

Ok, turns out I've not posted anything here for over a year. Well, my mid-year resolution is to post more stuff from now on. Or rather, post stuff more regularly from now on. Or, possibly just post stuff every now and again. From now on.

In honour of the life-drawing class I'll be attending on Monday at work (fully clothed I might add...) I'm going to upload some old life drawing-stuff I did over ten - yes, I said ten! - years ago in my college days.

Today I kept clicking on 'Next Blog' to see what kind of freaky people frequent this place. Out of 3 blogs that I happened upon, 2 of them were rude and that scared me deeply so I stopped!

Memories Of Pets (And Other Such Creatures)

I came home one day to find my budgie, Micky, sitting on the back of our Guinea-Pig, Jess. She didn't seem to mind though. The strange thing was that Jess was in her cage at the time, with the lid shut. I couldn't explain how Micky had got there in the first place!

I miss those crazy animals.

A friend of mine said he woke up one morning to find a mouse sitting on his chest, looking straight at him. He said the mouse was snarling, but I don't think mice can snarl, can they?

....I turned on the light and when I got to the kitchen, there he was. The black cat squinted as his massive eyes adjusted to the light, snarling at me menacingly. Then I sneezed and he ran through the cat-flap!

I once won a goldfish at the local fair (can't remember how I won him). He was the feistiest goldfish I've ever known! He once leapt out of his bowl and landed on the laminated floor of our kitchen. He then proceeded to perform what looked to me like slippery break dancing before I picked him up and dropped him back in his bowl.

I called him Flash.

We used to let our budgies out of the cage all of the time, so they could fly around the room to their hearts' content. Unfortunately Millie, a female albino budgie of questionable general health, was not an accomplished flyer. I remember she would struggle to fly from one end of the room to the other without ending up on the floor.

One time, I left the door open by mistake and Millie escaped into the kitchen. She flew around in circles for a few moments before her inevitable descent to ground level. Unfortunately, she didn't make it safely to the floor. Instead, she landed in the chip pan with a squawk and a sizzle.

Deep fried Budgerigar! We buried her in the garden, encased in her coffin of batter.

Our pet rabbit, Bess, was a true giant amongst rabbits. We used to let her roam around the garden, and inevitably she would follow us round, head butting our feet and getting her long, loppy ears tangled in our shoe-laces. I always figured it was some kind of rabbit ritual.

I loved Bess, even though I'm convinced she killed at least two of our guinea-pigs.

One day my dad went out to feed her, and discovered a fairly deep tunnel by her food bowl. There was no sign of Bess though. Then he looked down into the tunnel and noticed her at the end of it, motionless and not breathing. She had dug herself a grave to die in.

Our pet dog Jet, a female Black Labrador, brought me some of the most fun times of my life so far. Her name will crop up numerous times, for sure.

Once, as a puppy, Jet tried tunnelling under the fence separating our back garden from next-door's. She fell asleep half way through, her body still in our garden, her soil-smeared head peeking next door!

I was a frog fanatic, make no mistake. I used to visit the local frogs at the old village pond, where I would spend hours just watching them doing pretty much nothing at all.

I think sometimes I took my frog fascination too far though. For example, one sunny Summer morning, my mum had let me cycle over to the pond, on the condition that I met her at the church in time for Mass. I just wanted to check on the frogs, of course. As it turned out, they were just fine. In fact there were several with their heads sticking out of the water, chatting to each other in their ribbity tones.

Inevitably, I lost track of time, and before I knew it the alarm on my digital wrist watch was bleeping manically; that was my cue to get a move on.

In my haste I decided it would make sense to take a frog to church with me! So I reached for the nearest frog, and gently nestled him into my coat pocket, then set off to church. I named the frog 'ET', perhaps based on the famous cycle scene in the classic movie.

When I got there I was worried that ET would dry out during mass, so while no-one was looking I dipped him into the holy water by the church door, before popping him back into my pocket and settling down on the pew next to my mum.

The frog ribbited throughout Father Connelly's sermon, but I pretended I had the hiccups and my slimy sidekick remained unnoticed (although at least once I thought I saw the large statue of 'Jesus On The Cross' throw me a disapproving glance).

After mass I took ET back to the pond and chuckled (a litle sadly if I'm being honest) as he hopped off into the water.

I now have my own pond, and it is indeed full of my favourite slimy amphibians. I don't go to church anymore, and neither do the frogs.

Monsters You Never Knew Existed And Probably Never Will.

As a child, I was obssessed with mysteries of the unknown. You know the type, UFOs, ghosts, monsters, etc. The obssession faded over time, as I began to become more cynical - I think adulthood can close one's mind to such matters. However, the good old internet has rekindled me interest, specifically with matters of a strictly cryptozoological nature!

The following is a playful tribute to the weird and wonderful world of cryptozoology:

Giant Skunkesque - a tiny skunklike ape with trees.

Carton Creature - a creature with the appearance of a carton, which has been known to frequent many an unsuspecting person's refridgerator at night and sometimes morning!

The Gahelmiglob - A vague kind of thing.

-------------------

Janice The Terrible - A dark, bronze, red, blue sea serpent with the head of a body and spines along her green back. One eye witness claims to have seen Janice "ripping up at least 6 phone books all at once".

Thyracine - Musical monster. Thought to be dead. Might be, not sure though, can't remember.

Gee'Za'Babba - Oooooooh this one's a nasty piece of work. Covered in paper clips, likes to sneak around offices sneezing at the cleaners.

The Memphis Mushroom - Shaped like a mushroom, hence the name. VERY EVIL FACIAL FEATURES.

The Egg Beast Of Mungowa - The Devil's Own Breakfast. If you see this in your nightmares you'll wake up hungry...and possibly dead. (see above pic)

Chim-chim Chukka-chuk - Made entirely of felt. Obtuse.

Old Boris - A snake-like creature, with legs and fur. Roams around a lake somewhere. Reported by at least 2 people to be over 20ft in length. Looks smaller when you see it in real life.

The Great Dog Of Kensington - Doglike beast with the body of a dog and the head of a dog. Barks like a dog. Last seen in Kensington. WOOF.
